Change Your Air Filter
There’s only a few inches standing between you and a clean, pure, and healthy home environment. The air quality inside your home can be worse than the air quality outside, and air filters are the key for filtering out contaminants. Without the proper air filter, you can see a significant decrease in air quality, and also a rise in energy bills!
When air filters are changed regularly, your energy bills can decrease. As the filter collects particles in your air, the particles build up, clogging the fibers and decreasing air flow. This makes your HVAC system work harder, which can raise your heating and cooling bills!
Different Types of HVAC Air Filters
The type of air filter you choose depends on a few factors:
The type of system you have. Different HVAC systems recommend different types, widths, and sizes of air filters.
The level of filtration you want. Different types of air filters have different levels of filtration. For example, pleated air filters offer more filtration and last longer than non-pleated ones. There are also air filters specifically for filtering out allergens to create a truly pure environment.
The efficiency you want. MERV ratings (Minimum Efficiency Reporting Value) are what you would look at for the efficiency and level of filtration you want. Most residential air filters have a MERV rating of between 1 – 12, with 1 being your standard window air filter, and 12 being able to filter out particles as small as humidifier dust, lead dust, milled flour and auto emission particulates.
Changing and cleaning your HVAC air filter is the first step to improving indoor air quality. Other ways to keep your air clean include using non-toxic cleaning products, avoiding smoking, ventilating the house when you paint or clean, and using a whole-house humidifier to tackle excessively dry air. Installing indoor air quality equipment that functions with your HVAC system is another healthy option. Learn more about air cleaners.
